A no-flight zone (NFZ) or air exclusion zone (AEZ) is typically established by a nation on the territory of an enemy country during conflict or war. The purpose of a no-fly zone is to prevent enemy country aircraft from operating in the area. After a country implements a no-fly zone, military personnel are usually deployed to enforce it and also for surveillance purposes. To prevent violations, a country may also resort to pre-emptive strikes on aircraft. No-fly zones were previously established in 1991 during the Gulf War in Iraq, the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1993–95), and in 2011 during the civil war in Libya. However, no-fly zones are not permitted only in a military context. They can also be installed for civilian purposes. For example, it was installed during the 2012 Olympic Games held in London.
