‘The woven traditional poem’, for me, the phrase captures the essence of a silk saree. As a child, wearing mom's silk saree was one of the best feelings. Even today, my love for them remains the same. It is probably not wrong to say that they are the first love of many women. Interestingly, the history of silk sarees is as rich as the silk sarees themselves. The love for silk among the people in India is not new, and every region here has their own way of weaving them. So, we bring you 10 places in India popular for the uniqueness of the silk found there.

Banarasi Silk

Banarasi Sarees are considered the finest silk sarees of India. The gold/silver border of zari or brocade and rich embroidery contribute to its immense popularity. The beginning of brocade and zari work can be traced back to the 19th century. However, it is also said that work of silk brocade weaving started in Banaras in the 17th century and developed in excellence in 18th and 19th century. So, when you visit Varanasi, don't forget to buy one for yourself or your loved ones.

Bhagalpuri Silk

Bhagalpuri sarees are an all-time favourite of any Indian woman who loves to drape sarees on every occasion. The origin of these sarees can be traced to the Bhagalpur region of Bihar, known as the ‘Silk City’ of India. This city has a history of craftsmen who are experts in weaving this special type of silk. A limited number of silkworms are used in weaving these sarees, so this silk is also referred to as ‘Peace Silk’.

Chanderi Silk

It is said that the fabric used for the beautiful Sarees of  Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh came into existence in the Vedic era. Legends have it that Lord  Krishna's aunt's son Shishupala discovered it. Chanderi's evolution began in 1890. Earlier, the weavers of Chanderi used to make cloth with their own hands, whereas now, weavers have switched to mill made yarn instead of handmade yarn. By the end of the 1970s, weavers started adding tana cotton and bana silk in the fabric. It lent extra strength to the fabric. Three types of fabrics are manufactured: Chanderi Pure Silk, Chanderi Cotton and Silk Cotton.

Mysore Silk

The development of the silk industry began during the reign of Tipu Sultan in the Kingdom of Mysore. According to some facts, the first silk factory of Mysore was started by Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the Maharaja of Mysore province in the year 1912. The production of silk in this factory was started in the year 1932. The Maharaja of Mysore imported 32 looms from Switzerland, which were first of their kind in India. After the independence of India, Mysore State Sericulture Department took control of the silk weaving factory. The simple use of yarn and zari to bring out true extravagance never ceases to amaze us till this date.

Kanchipuram Silk

Kanchipuram is a town of Tamilnadu, famous for its Kanjivaram Sarees. According to Hindu mythology, the weavers of Kanjeevaram Sarees are considered to be the descendants of Maharishi Markandeya, who used the lotus flower fibres to weave dresses for the Deities himself. Some historical facts state that Kanjeevaram Sarees became known for their superior workmanship from the time of King Krishnadeva Raya. Mulberry silk of superior quality is used in the making of each Kanjeevaram saree. Kanjeevaram silk sarees are made by traditional hand-weaving technique, known as Korvai Technique. The city is home to 45,000 expert weavers from the Dewang and Pattu Salier communities.
