The railway network is like the backbone of any country, as it plays a major role in its commercial, industrial, and economic development. These days every country is working to prove a high-speed rail network. The railway network is an asset for any country and for its citizens. Countries with railway networks have seen an exceptional role in overall development in all sectors over the past few decades. Let’s know some of the world’s longest railway networks in this article.

1. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

America is the country that tops the list of countries with the largest railway network in the world. The country has a private railway network that extends over a length of 224792 km. America developed a railway network at a very early stage and this was a major factor in its development of America. The country is incessantly evolving its rail network to provide advanced volume and higher speeds.

2. CHINA

China has a rail network with a length of 112,000 km, with an electrified length of 55,811 km. Railway is nationalized in this country, the country is growing very fast in the last 2 decades and the base of China is its manufacturing industry. The railway network supports the country by providing the infrastructure for moving containers and raw materials from one place to another.

3. RUSSIA

Russia has the largest railway network with a length of 86,000 km, of which about 50,000 km are electrified. The country is huge and definitely needs a huge railway infrastructure to meet the needs of the population and the country. Rail transport in Russia is often described as an economic wonder of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

4. INDIA

India is at number 4 in the list with its railway network route spread over a distance of 66,687 km and electrified length of 23,555 km. The railway is a nationalized department in the country and the railway network in the country is still in the development stage the country is setting up a network of bullet trains. A vast network of railways is necessary to support the massive population.

5. CANADA

Canada boasts the fifth largest railway network in the world, with a private rail network spanning a total length of 46,552 km. About 129 km of the railway network is electrified. The major operators in the country are CN Rail, CP Rail, and Via Rail, the country's railway network is also connected to the United States.

6. GERMANY

Germany, is also on the list of the world’s largest railway networks with a length of 43468 km, out of which 20497 km is electrified. Germany's railway network is nationalized, there is no speed limit in the country and likewise, the country also has a vast network of mass rail, with a total ridership of 2.01 billion in the country.

7. AUSTRALIA

Australia comes at the seventh position in the world’s largest railway networks list, with its nationalized railway network which is 38445 km long, out of which the electrified line is 2715 km. Most of the Australian grid is nationalized, but a small portion is private, which also serves the country's leading mining industry.

8. ARGENTINA

The South American country Argentina is among the countries with the largest railway network. Its nationalized network reaches a length of 36966 km, of which 136 km is electrified. Argentina's railway network consists of three different gauges, it was once known as one of the most extensive and rich networks in the world.

9. SOUTH AFRICA

The total railway network of South Africa is about 31000 kilometers and has some luxury trains one of the most notable trains is known as the Blue Train. This train runs from Cape Town to Johannesburg. A high-speed rail network has been proposed in the country but work has yet to begin.

10. FRANCE

France has a railway network that is 29640 km long and 15140 km of this length is electrified. France is a nationalized railway network, with the country's rail network owned by SNCF. The rail network in the country has about 1300 tunnels and the longest bridge is 2.178 km.
