North-East India lies in the lap of the eastern Himalayan mountains in the north-eastern part of India. Connected to the rest of India only by about 20 km of land (at Siliguri, West Bengal), Northeast India shares over 2,000 km of borders with Bhutan, China, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Although North-East India is very rich in its food culture, it is very different in its taste and flavors from the rest of the country. Generally, the residents of this region are non-vegetarian and have a fondness for spices. Dishes prepared from bamboo shoots and ducks are popular in the region. So, let’s explore the famous cuisine of North-East India.

1. MOMOS, SIKKIM

Momos is a Tibetan dish, which is very popular all over Sikkim. Whenever you go to visit Sikkim, you will not find any road where there is no momos stall. You will find about 3 or 4 types of momos at every momos shop, the most popular of which are steamed and fried momos.

2. THUKPA SOUP, ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Thukpa Soup is one of the most famous and delicious dishes of Arunachal Pradesh. Although thukpa soup is a Tibetan dish, its taste is taken to combat the cold winters of Arunachal Pradesh. If you are a non-vegetarian then you can also take its non-vegetarian variant, which is twice as tasty as the vegetarian one.

3. CHAKHWI, TRIPURA

Chakhvi is a very famous non-vegetarian food of Tripura which is made of pork, and green papaya. Chakhvi Tripura is a very traditional, tasty, and healthy food, hearing about which people who like non-vegetarian get water in their mouth.

4. PAPAYA KHAR, ASSAM

An unusual combination of red rice, beaten lentils, and raw papaya with traditional Assamese spices, Khar is a dish that leaves locals as well as tourists licking their fingers. If you are on a trip to Assam, then you must not miss tasting it, because if you come back without tasting it, surely your journey will remain incomplete.

5. MISA MACH POORA, MIZORAM

If you are a seafood lover then you must try one of Mizoram's famous dishes Bar Meesa Mach Pora. Popularly, the Meesa Mach Pora dish is also known as the Grilled Shrimp dish. It is seasoned with some coriander and peppercorns, wrapped in banana leaves, and grilled over charcoal. This gives it a smoky flavor. The dish can be served either as a starter or as a side dish with rice.

6. EROMBA, MANIPUR

Manipur is a small state of India that is known for its culture and costumes as well as food which the name of Eromba comes first. Eromba is a dish prepared from dried and fermented fish and locally available vegetables. It is served with rice. If you like eating fish, then you will definitely like this dish. Eromba is a regular dish for Manipuri households, except for those that are vegetarian.

7. BAMOO SHOOT FRY, NAGALAND

Bamboo shoots are a famous food of almost the entire North Eastern part of India, especially Nagaland. It is mainly used in the preparation of pork. Bamboo shoot is used in dried and fermented form. It gives a slightly sour taste to the dishes.

8. JADHO, MEGHALAYA

Jadho is a very popular dish in the Khasi community of Meghalaya. As soon as you feel its beautiful color and fragrance, you feel hungry. Jadho is mainly red rice cooked with pork, chicken, or fish. Many spices are used in it to enhance the taste. To make this delicious dish, a mixture of green chilies, onions, ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and bay leaves is first prepared, after which it is fried with small pieces of meat. Later, red rice is cooked by mixing Jadho in it. You can use pork, chicken, or fish as per your choice.
