Varanasi
Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities not just of India but the world. Mark Twain once said, "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together." The city is considered a great centre of learning, music and culture, a commercial centre famed for brocade, silk and muslin fabrics. The mystical riverfront of shrines and age-old building and beliefs, the ancient city reverberates with history.
Ujjain
The ancient city in the heart of India is situated on the banks of Kshipra River. As per the epic Mahabharata, Ujjaini was the capital of Avanti Kingdom. The city was political, cultural and literacy centre of Malwa plateau. Ujjain is known for its Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple, once in twelve years Simhasta Kumbh Mela, Sufi saint Rumi's tomb and die painted fabrics of Bhairogarh. The city is said to have been the residence of Ashoka at the time he worked as viceroy of the western province of Maurya Empire.
Patna
Patna or Pataliputra as it was earlier known has a history that spans three millennia. It's history and tradition go back as early as the dawn of civilization. It is also said that Pataliputra was founded by Ajatshatru. The city was the fountainhead of knowledge and wisdom with its close proximity to the ancient universities of Nalanda and Vikramshila.
Madurai
Madurai is renowned for its beautiful temples and fragrant jasmine blossoms. Madurai's history dates all the way back to the Sangam period, the golden period of Tamil literature. Many masterpieces were created here during its golden period. The city situated at the bank of Vaigai was constructed in the form of a lotus and is still built around the temple. The city is often referred to as the 'Athens of the East' owing to its rich cultural heritage and architectural splendour.
Pushkar
It is said that when Lord Bramha came down to earth, he named the place Pushkar where the flower fell from Brahma's hand. It is a major attraction among pilgrims from across the country. The most famous attraction being the Brahma Temple, it is said to be the only temple of the deity in the world. An annual cattle fair is held here that draws the tourists from around the world. The moustache competition is an unique activity carried out in this ancient town.
