Mango is the
king of fruits and everyone's favorite in India. Many varieties of mangoes are
found in our country. You will be surprised to know that 1500 varieties of this
fruit are grown in India. Now just think, when there are so many varieties,
then their specialties will also be different. There is a lot of difference in
the texture and taste of these mangoes, which are available with different
names. Some varieties of mango are very popular like Dussehri, Langra, Chausa
etc. Another funny thing about mangoes is that everyone has their own
preferences about mangoes. Let us tell you about such special mangoes of India
which are very popular and also how you can identify them.
1. MALDA MANGO
The Malda
mango is named after the Malda district of West Bengal. There is also a special
variety of this mango called Fazli. There is a demand for this mango even in
foreign countries, so it is exported more.
2. CHAUSA MANGO
One of the
most popular mango varieties, the Chausa mango is green and yellow in color and
has an unforgettable taste. It is usually available in the markets at the end
of the summer season and the beginning of the rainy season.
3. DUSSEHRI MANGO
Dussehri
mango commonly grown in the northern parts of
India is famous for its juicy taste. This mango is cultivated in UP. Its
production is more in the villages around Lucknow like Kakori, Nandi Firozpur, and Malihabad.
4. HAPUS MANGO
Hapus is
also known by the name Alphonso. It is quite famous for its sweetness and taste
and is in great demand in the international market as well. The
saffron-colored Hapus mangoes are the most
expensive of all the mangoes available in our country. It is mainly grown in
Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Deogarh, and Raigarh districts of Maharashtra.
5. LANGDA MANGO
Langra is
one of the few famous varieties of mango which is found in Banaras and Uttar
Pradesh. These mangoes are available from July to August. The name of this
mango was langda because, for the first time, the farmer who grew this mango in
his field had no legs.
6. KESAR MANGO
This mango
got its name because it smells like saffron. It is cultivated in the
surrounding areas of Gir Sanctuary. Saffron mango is mostly grown in Amreli and
Junagadh districts.
7. HIMSAGAR MANGO
The Himsagar
mango is native to the Murshidabad region of Bengal and is a medium-sized mango of yellow to green color in appearance. This mango
is available only for a very short period i.e. from May to June.
8. BADAMI MANGO
Badami mango
is also known as Alphonso of Karnataka. It is known for its freshness. Juice-making companies prepare juice from this mango pulp.
9. TOTAPURI MANGO
The name
Totapuri is given to this mango because of its parrot-like color and shape.
This mango is preferred in the form of pickles and salads. It mainly comes from
Andhra Pradesh.
10. BANGANAPALLI MANGO
Safeda,
Benishan, or Banganapalli mango, you can call it by any name. This yellow-colored
mango is excellent in taste. It is produced in the Kurnool district of Andhra
Pradesh.
11. MALLIKA MANGO
Famous for
its exceptionally sweet taste, Mallika mango is a hybrid variety of Dussheri
and Neelam. It is available in the market between June and July.
