INDIA'S ONLY ACTIVE VOLCANO
Barren
Island is the only surviving volcano in India. Not only this, but Barren Island is
also the only active volcano in South Asia. It is located in the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands of India. Barren Island volcano located in the Andaman and
Nicobar Islands is 140 km from the capital Port Blair. It is situated at a
distance of North-East. Barren Island, spread over 3 km, is the easternmost
island of the Andaman Islands. Baron means barren. Barren, where no one lives.
This island has been named after itself, there is no human population living
here. The forest here is also negligible. Only a small number of animals and
birds have been seen on this island.
Records are
available about its island from 1787 and since then 11 volcanoes have erupted
here. The smoke keeps coming out from time to time, that is, it remains active
continuously. However, the last time it erupted was in the year 2016 and lava
was coming out for several days. This is the reason that even to go around it
needs special permission which has to be taken from the forest department of
the island group. Even today, smoke can be seen coming out of it.
The waters
around Barren Island are reputed to be among the top scuba diving destinations
in the world. The water around it is considered very good and safe in the world
for learning scuba diving. Due to being near the volcano, corals, lava, and many
different types of fish can be seen in this water.
WHAT IS A VOLCANO?
You may be
surprised to know that a volcano is actually a mountain under which there is a
deposit of molten lava. When stones melt from the earth's energy or geothermal
energy, then the pressure increases from the bottom of the ground to the top,
then this mountain erupts from above and it is called a volcano. Volcanoes are
found only where there is tension in the tectonic plates or the interior of the
Earth is very hot. The molten stones and gases under the volcano are called
magma and when this magma comes out after the eruption of the volcano, it is
called lava.
TYPES OF VOLCANOES
1. Active
Volcano
Active
volcanoes are always active. Etna and Stromboli in Italy are examples of this:
Lava always comes out of their mouth. Stromboli Volcano is located on an island
in the Mediterranean, from which the surrounding area is always illuminated by
erupting. For this reason, this volcano is called the lighthouse of the
Mediterranean Sea. The highest active volcano in the world is Cotopaxi in South
America.
2.
Dormant Volcano
When the
eruption of a volcano occurs very rarely, that is, that volcano is called a
dormant volcano. Japan's Fuse and Italy's Vesuvius are examples of dormant
volcanoes.
3.
Extinct Volcano
This type of
volcano had once erupted, but now there is no possibility of a volcanic
eruption. Its mouth is closed by filling it with volcanic materials. A Crater
lake is formed due to water filling in its mouth crater. Popa of Myanmar and
Crater Lake in the state of Oregon in the United States are prime examples.
HOW MANY VOLCANOES ARE THERE IN INDIA?
There are
many other volcanoes in India, but no movement of any kind has ever been
recorded in these volcanoes. These volcanoes include Narcondam, Dhekan Traps,
Baratang, Dinodhar Hills, Dhosi Hills, and Tosham Hills. Not only this, but it
also includes the Baratang Mud volcano of the Andaman Islands, which throws out
mud instead of lava.
