SIX WAR MEMORIAL IN INDIA THAT SHOULD BE VISITED BY EVERYONE

'Indian Army' - on hearing these two words, we bow our heads in respect for their sacrifice and gratitude. It is the bravery of the Indian Army that we are able to sleep peacefully in our homes every night. Since our independence till now, the Indian Army has stood firm against infiltrators, terrorists, and other external attacks. Since independence, we have made the supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country. The purpose of war memorials built at various places in the country is to remember the brave soldiers who have lost their lives defending the country. So far, the Indian Army has built 18 war memorials at various places in India. Today we are going to tell you about 6 of them which you must visit once in your life to show your gratitude towards our soldiers.

1. TAWANG WAR MEMORIAL, ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Tawang Memorial is locally known as Namgyal Chorten. This 40 feet high war memorial is located just a short distance from Tawang town. The monument is designed using Buddhist architectural and cultural elements, including prayer wheels and flags, colorful serpents, dragons, and other items associated with Buddhism. The memorial was built in memory of 2,420 army personnel who laid down their lives in the Kameng district during the Sino-Indian War in 1962. 

2. KARGIL WAR MEMORIAL, LADAKH

The Kargil Memorial, located on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, is dedicated to the soldiers and officers of the Indian Army who laid down their lives during the 1999 Indo-Pakistani War. Pink sandstone has been used to make the wall of this monument, in which a brass plate has been installed. The names of the soldiers who were martyred during Operation Vijay are written on this plate. Every year 26 July is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas. 

3. DARJEELING WAR MEMORIAL, WEST BENGAL

The Darjeeling War Memorial is in the middle of the Batasia Loop Garden in Darjeeling. It has been built as a mark of respect to the spirit of service of the Gorkha soldiers of the Darjeeling region, who laid down their lives to defend the country in various campaigns and wars after India's independence. Many Gorkha soldiers serve the nation from the hills of Darjeeling. More than 75 soldiers have died in wars and campaigns since India's independence.

4. LONGEWALA MEMORIAL, RAJASTHAN

Longewala is a border town of the Thar Desert situated in the western part of Jaisalmer. It is very close to the Pakistani border. The Battle of Longewala was one of the first major engagements in the Western sector during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, fought between Pakistani forces and Indian defenders at the Indian border post of Longewala. The museum attached to this war memorial displays the ammunition used in the war and the uniforms of the soldiers. 

5. NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL, NEW DELHI

National War Memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019. Located near India Gate in New Delhi this is the National War Memorial which will tell you the stories of the heroic saga of all the wars fought so far. This memorial is built on 40 acres of land. The names of more than 25,000 soldiers martyred in the wars after 1947 have been written in this memorial built at a cost of Rs 176 crore. Apart from the names of the martyrs, statues of 21 Param Vir Chakra winners have also been made in the memorial.

6. VICTORY WAR MEMORIAL, TAMIL NADU

The Victory War Memorial was earlier known as Cupid's Bay. This war memorial situated on the border of Chennai city is very beautiful. The Victory War Memorial was built to celebrate the victory of the Allied forces during World War I. It later became a war memorial in memory of those from the Madras Presidency who laid down their lives fighting in World War II. Today, it is known as a memorial to the 1948 Kashmir invasion, the 1962 war with China, and the Indo-Pakistani War as well as the above wars.
