TRIP TO THE STATUE OF UNITY
Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the "Iron Man of India", was not only a
freedom fighter but also a visionary leader. Born on October 31, 1875, in
Gujarat, Patel was a dedicated lawyer. He always stood for justice, equality, and unity. His contribution was also in the making of the Indian Constitution.
Because he served as a key member of the Constituent Assembly and chaired the
committee responsible for drafting the Constitution, he played an important
role in merging many Indian princely states into the country. Which includes
other princely states including Hyderabad.
National
Unity Day is celebrated every year on 31 October in India as the birth
anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The day is celebrated as Rashtriya
Ekta Diwas to honor his monumental achievement of integrating more than 550
princely states into the Union of India. In a diverse country like India, unity
among its people is extremely important. At a time when many princely states
were fragmented, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel supported the vision of a united
India. National Unity Day commemorates the struggles and sacrifices made by
Patel and other activists to unite the country. It affirms solidarity, promotes
the spirit of "Unity in Diversity" and emphasizes the importance of
maintaining national integrity.
National
Unity Day was officially established in 2014 by the Government of India to
honor the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Patel was a staunch supporter of
a united and strong India and this dedication was reflected in his life's work.
The government's decision to designate his birthday as National Unity Day
underlines the importance of his contribution. In 2018, on the 143rd birth
anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
inaugurated the grand ‘Statue of Unity’ near the Narmada River in
Gujarat. Patel's famous slogan, "Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat" still
inspires the nation.
The 'Statue
of Unity' is the tallest statue not only in India but in the world and a symbol
of pride for India. The Statue of Unity has now become a favorite destination
for tourists and the number of tourists coming here is also continuously
increasing. Recently, reports have revealed that the Statue of Unity has left
behind the top 5 monuments of the country in terms of earnings. In just one and
a half years, this memorial has earned more than Rs 120 crore. The earnings of
this monument are continuously increasing. After its inauguration in the year
2018, more than 24 lakh tourists came here in one year, from which about Rs 64

The height
of the 'Statue of Unity' installed on the Sardar Sarovar Dam is 182 meters,
which is twice the height of the 93-meter-high 'Statue of Liberty' in New York,
America. Its total weight is 1700 tons. Foot height is 80 feet, hand height is
70 feet, shoulder height is 140 feet and face height is 70 feet. Rs 2989 crore
has been spent on making the statue of Sardar Patel. It is said that 200
engineers and 2,500 laborers were involved in its construction. There are two
lifts installed in this statue, through which Sardar Patel's chest can be
reached and from there, the view of Sardar Sarovar Dam can be seen. Also,
beautiful valleys can be enjoyed. There is a bridge and boat arrangement for
the tourists to reach the statue of Sardar. Engineers have completed this
statue through four stages - mock-up, 3D, scanning technology, and computer
numerical control production technology.
The biggest challenge in making the statue was to protect it from earthquakes and other disasters. In such a situation, this statue has been built so strongly that it can withstand even an earthquake of 6.5 magnitude. Four metals have been used in this statue of Sardar Patel, which will not rust for years. 85 percent copper has been used in the idol. Apart from this, 5700 metric tons of structural steel and 18500 metric tons of reinforcement bars have also been used. This statue is made of 22500 metric tons of cement. It took about 46 months to construct the statue. Lakhs of tonnes of iron and copper were used in the construction of the Iron Man statue. Iron was also collected from the people.
