COUNTRIES WHERE INDIANS CAN DRIVE WITH AN INDIAN LICENSE
When
visiting a new country, exploring by road can be one of the most rewarding
experiences. While many travelers rely on public transportation, taxis, or
rental vehicles to navigate foreign lands, did you know that some countries
allow Indian citizens to drive without requiring an International Driving
Permit (IDP)? In fact, there are several nations where an Indian driver's
license is sufficient for road travel. However, the validity and conditions of
these licenses can differ depending on the destination.
Here is a
guide to some countries where Indian drivers can legally drive with their
Indian driving license:
1. UNITED STATES
In the United States, most states permit Indian nationals to drive with a valid Indian license for up to a year. The license must be in English, and drivers should carry the I-94 form, which confirms their arrival date in the country. While driving in the US, it is important to note that different states may have varying requirements, so it is wise to check with local authorities before driving.
2. MALAYSIA
In Malaysia, Indian citizens can use their Indian driving licenses, but the license must either be in English or Malay. If the license is not in either of these languages, it must be verified by the Indian Embassy in Malaysia. Alternatively, an International Driving Permit may be required in such cases.
3. GERMANY
Indian nationals can drive in Germany for up to six months using their Indian driving license. However, it is recommended to have a German translation of the license to avoid any confusion with authorities. Carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) can also be a good practice, even though it is not mandatory.
4. AUSTRALIA
In Australia, the validity of an Indian driving license depends on the state. For example, in New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia, Indian licenses are valid for three months. It’s important to note that the license must be in English, and if it is in any regional Indian language, a translation may be necessary.
5. UNITED KINGDOM
In the UK, Indian driving licenses are valid for one year from the date of entry. However, the license holder must only drive vehicles allowed under the conditions of their Indian license. After one year, individuals may need to apply for a UK driving license if they plan to continue driving.

New Zealand allows Indian citizens to drive for up to one year with a valid Indian driving license, provided they are at least 21 years old. The license must either be in English or include a translation approved by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
