San Rafael Waterfalls in Ecaudor suddenly disappeared
Due to an unknown reasons, the largest waterfall in Ecuador suddenly disappeared. The popular tourist destination in Ecaudor, the San Rafael on the Coca river attracted tons of tourists every year. With it's green surroundings and picturesque landscape cascading these 150m high waterfall made this place a heaven for adventure and nature lovers.
Possible reasons for disappearance
According to the local officials, the reason behind the disappearance could be a large sinkhole that opened underneath the river that was the source of water to the waterfall. This would have led to the disappearance of the waterfall and formation of the three streams in its place. However the experts have different opinion, they believe it could be an outcome of the hydroelectric plant that has been constructed nearby, although the area is reportedly seismically active.
For now the exact reason of the disappearance of the waterfall is not known. There is a lot of disagreement on the cause the disappearance of this beautiful tourist place. But the sad part is that the San Rafael Waterfall has disappeared, be it because of the man-made cause or a natural reason.
On this case, Jorge Celi, Director of the National Water Reference Laboratory of the Ikiam Amazon Regional University, said these aren't common and happen only in 1000 years, he believes that this could be the result of human activities in the basin.
The tourism spot is no longer available
The San Rafeal waterfall is no longer available for tourism and is not featured on the country's website. Geologisists are still looking into the matter for the reasons of disappearance of the falls.
