We have heard many tales of a place being haunted, and I bet everyone has met at least one person who had personal experience with a supernatural entity or maybe some of you might be that person. So, for the people who believe in these spine chilling tales and also those who call themselves sceptics, here are places from around the globe with a reputation of being haunted.

Edinburgh Castle - Castle of the Lost Piper

grasshopper yatra Image

Edinburgh Castle is one of the places where most paranormal activities have been reported.  The castle is set atop Castle Rock, an extinct volcano. It is a rich piece of architecture. But this beautiful building has witnessed a lot of sufferings and deaths.

The castle vaults were used as cells for the foreign war prisoners of the Scottish National War and later the soldiers of the First World War. There is a labyrinth of underground tunnels underneath the castle, connecting it to the Royal Mile. When these tunnels were first discovered, a bagpiper was sent to explore them. The piper played the pipe so that the people above him could track him. Halfway to the Royal Mile, the music stopped. A search party was sent down to look for the piper, but no sign of the boy was found. Some people still report hearing music from the underground at night.

Many visitors have also reported sighting men dressed as soldiers and also spotted a dog wandering in the dog cemetery in the castle grounds. What makes this place creepier is that the ghostly or a supernatural presence has been scientifically proven.

Poveglia Island – Quarantine of the Dead

Venice is a dream destination for many but not so far from here is the place that turned out to be a nightmare, Poveglia Island. When the Black Plague arrived in Venice, the citizens afflicted with Plague were deported here to die. Those who could not protest were burnt to death here on the island.

After the plague epidemic ended, a mental asylum was constructed on the Island. It was rumoured that a psychiatrist performed barbaric experiments on the patients. Later he committed suicide, jumping off the top of the bell tower of the island. Though, after a few years, the tower was broken down, turned into a lighthouse. Although there is no bell tower anymore, some people claim to have heard the ringing sound of the bell upon visiting the place.

The government had decided later to restore the mental hospital, but the work stopped midway for an unrevealed reason. The word on the street is that the workers were drawn away from the island by the vengeful spirits haunting the place.

Bhangarh – The City Cursed to Ruins

grasshopper yatra Image

Bhangarh has always been on the list when people are discussing horror destinations in India. This beautiful town was once a powerful kingdom, inhabited and beautifully built. The ruins that remain today are proof of it. People, despite the rumours, still visit this place during the day.

Bhangarh has a very interesting story behind it. It is said that the place was cursed by a Tantrik, who was well versed in black magic. He fell in love with Princess Ratnawati, but as he knew that he did not stand a chance, he tried using his black magic. But his plan failed as the princess found out and threw away the bottle of perfume he had used as a tool to cast a spell on her. The magic reversed and he died but before dying he cursed the land. A few years later a war broke out between Bhangarh and a nearby kingdom. Everyone in the village died and no one has ever lived there since. It is said it is now inhabited by some mysterious forces.

The people who dared to spend the night in this town are believed to have never returned to see the light of the day.

Bhangarh remains beautifully shrouded in mystery and continues to attract visitors.

The Catacombs – Tombs of the Undead

Paris is not all about love and romance if that is what you thought. Right underneath this city of lights, there is a mysterious burial ground. The Catacombs, a place built due to shortage of burial ground, is home to bones of over 6 million people. Today it is rumoured to be one of the most haunted destinations.

The place came into the limelight in the 1990s, when a group of explorers came across an abandoned video camera. The camera had a video of a person, and it could be clearly guessed that he was lost in the catacombs. There were a lot of unclear voices that could be heard in the background. No one ever found out who the owner was or where he went. This made the people speculate that when the dusk falls, the skulls come to life. Such stories about the place have lured the people to explore catacombs in a bid to get a taste of its mystery.

This place has inspired some horror movies in Hollywood especially after the incident when the police found secret hideouts in the restricted areas of the catacombs.

Châtaeu De Brissac – Home of the Green Lady

grasshopper yatra Image

Châtaeu De Brissac was built in the 11th century and fortified in the 15th century. Literally translated as the ‘tallest castle in France’, The Châtaeu was home of Charles VII. This castle, like most other historic castles, has a dark history to its credit. The castle is said to be haunted by ‘La Dame Verte’, or  ‘The Green Lady’.

The Green Lady is said to be the spirit haunting Charlotte de Brézé, the illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII and his mistress, Agnes Soles. She was married to Jacques de Brézé. It was a politically motivated marriage and the duo did not love each other. The couple did not even sleep in the same room. It is said that the Lady had an affair with a man named Pierre de Lavergne. One night, Jacques caught them red-handed and in a fit of rage murdered the adulterous couple.

The spirit of the Lady is still heard moaning in the castle, mostly spotted in the tower room of the chapel wearing a green gown, hence the name ‘Green Lady’. Many people have reported sighting the spirit and her moans can be heard in the castle in early morning hours.

Stanley Hotel – Inspiration of ‘The Shining’

Stanley Hotel is said to be the inspiration behind Stephen King’s “The Shining”. It is said that he spent a night in room 217 which inspired him into writing the book. Colorado’s Stanley Hotel is listed among one of the most haunted hotels. The hotel, built in the Colonial Revival style, has attracted a number of paranormal investigators from shows like ‘Ghost Hunters’ and ‘Ghost Adventurers’.

Not just our favourite horror writer, but many other guests tell the stories of their horror experience in Stanley Hotel’s room 217. The room is said to be haunted by Mrs Wilson, the head housekeeper who died here. They have reported objects moving, luggage unpacking and as Mrs Wilson seems to be an old fashioned spirit, she doesn’t like unmarried couples lodging together, and they have reported feeling a cold force between them while staying together. Not just this room, a lot of other areas of the hotel are reported as paranormal hotspots like The Vortex, the Concert hall, the Grand Staircase, and other rooms like 401, 428 and the infamous underground caves.

For the supernatural enthusiast and the sceptics, these rooms are available for lodging. So, if supernatural adventure is your thing, try visiting Stanley Hotel.

Isla De Las Munecas – The Island of Ghost Dolls

Isla De Las Munecas translated as the Island of Dolls. The island, located south of Mexico City, has a sad past and today is counted among the most haunted destinations of the world. An uninhabited island with creepy looking dolls hanging from its trees, the island inspires fear even in the bright light of the day and gets scarier in the dark.

Isla De Las Munecas is dedicated to the lost soul of a girl who was found drowned in a nearby canal by the caretaker of the island, named Julian. As Julian was not able to save the girl’s life, he started blaming himself for her death. A few days later, he found a doll in the same canal, assuming the doll belonged to the girl he took it out and hung it on a tree. It is said Julian was haunted by the spirit of the dead girl and he kept hanging more dolls to please the spirit. After fifty years of hanging dolls, he was found dead at the same spot. It is said that the dolls are possessed by the spirit of the little girl.

Many visitors have reported that these dolls come to life sometimes and even talk to each other in whispers.

The RMS Queen Mary – The Real Ghost Ship

grasshopper yatra Image

The ship RMS Queen Mary, when it was set to sail, was the longest ship. It’s craftsmanship was and still is considered elegant and unique.

The ship is rumoured to be haunted by many ghosts. It is believed that the ghost of the dead girl is still looking for her mother in the bathroom where she was murdered by her father. Another ghost is of a little girl who leaves wet footprints near the pools, splashes water and plays around the pool. A lot of travellers reportedly have heard a little girl’s voice calling out to her parents or giggling by the pool area. In the same area, there is another spirit that wanders in the changing room with a bathing suit draped around.

Though spooky incidents have been reported from a lot of rooms of the B deck on RMS Queen Mary, room number B – 340 is the hub of supernatural activities. The occupants have complained hearing strange noises, footsteps, their stuff and the furniture moving on its own and sometimes even the comforters being ripped off from the bed.

Also, plenty of other ghosts of staff and crew members are believed to be onboard the ship. RMS Queen Mary has become a tourist destination for supernatural adventurers who don't seem to mind an encounter or two with the visitors from the supernatural realm.
