As intrastate and interstate travel resumes slowly, the lodging and hospitality industry is placing its best bets on the young travellers, who would be desperately looking for a weekend getaway to a near destination, after staying in for over two month. The industry came to a sudden halt once the travel ban was placed by the Indian Government, but it is now reopening gradually in the Unlock 1.0.

Hotels are ticking all the boxes for zero contact check in and other safety measures required to ensure the customers that they would be staying in a COVID-19 free place. Because the travellers still might be uncertain about their safety and no one wants to catch the disease.

Younger generation is looking for a place to stay in less prices

Rahul Chauhan, the founder of RoomsXpert, said, "Youngsters are looking to book accommodations for long stays as they want a change from the work from home module. Offices also don't mind if employees are coming online from a beach in Goa or from home. So work and leisure is likely to get mixed here."

Hostel accommodation services like Zostel are preparing their properties with no contact workstations and internet facilities. The co-founder of Zostel also said that there is an increase in inqueries about long term staycations as the younger generation is looking for a place to stay in less prices as work from home becomes the latest trend today. Hotels are planning to allow only 50 percent of the total accommodation to follow social distancing.

Among hospitality services Oyo told that there is an increased demand driven by young travellers, small business owners and corporate.

People want to travel to nearby destinations more

An Amsterdam based company booking.com had launched a travel campaign that revealed that after being confined for so long people want to visit beaches and get some sunshine. In the “wish list” campaign it was also revealed that 42% of the people would stay in a hotel while only 18% considered a resort. People are also only wishing to travel to nearby destinations as they can take their private vehicles there. It is quite clear that people still feel uncertain about taking public transport.

"People won't be comfortable for a while (to use public transport). They would not bother to sit with someone because there social distancing cannot happen. But people will travel and it will start with destinations closer to home where you can drive together as a family," said Gurbaxish Singh Kohli,  Vice-President of  the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI).

The central government has permitted hotels to start reopening from June 8, after a long break of over two months.
